The Norrøna in trouble on the Atlantic

Smyril-Line’s the Norrøna.

Smyril Lines ferry the Norrøna was in trouble on November 10 on a crossing from Bergen to Torshavn in gale force weather with wind up to 32 m/sec. During the crossing the Norrøna had a blackout leaving the ship powerless in the high waves.

The ferry carried 244 passengers and 81 crew members, but none of them were injured when the Norrøna was lying powerless with heavy rulings, up to 35° to each side. On the car deck a trailer turned over and smashed some 12 private cars and furthermore a number of the 210 cars onboard were damaged. The Norrøna was sailed to Lerwick on the Shetlands Islands to have a leak repaired. During the rolling in the heavy weather one of the ship’s stabilizers was slammed against the hull, leaving a crack of several meters. However the stabilizer-room is a watertight compartment and there was no immediate danger to the ship’s safety.
