Polish captain in prison after platform collision
The Polish captain, who was standing watch onboard the general cargo vessel Jork when it rammed an unmanned gas platform on the Viking field in the North Sea on August 3, has been given a prison sentence.
He was drunk, with three times the legal amount of alcohol in his blood, and a British court has sentenced him to six months in prison for this. He has also been sentenced to twelve months in prison for having sailed the ship closer than 500 metres from the platform. All seven members of the crew landed in the water but were rescued by helicopters, the ship sank the day after.
