Ferry officer aquitted in pleasure craft collision case

The officer on watch on the P&O Ferry Pride of Bilbao that was charged for a collision with a sailing yacht in the English Channel has been acquitted and cleared of all charges.

The accident led to all three on the yacht losing their lives. The officer claimed that the accident was not caused by him or by the Pride of Bilbao. According to the seafarer union Nautilus, the increasing number of pleasure crafts around busy shipping lines is a problem of great concern. The union also says that the accident investigation shows that there are serious shortcomings in the adequacy of navigation equipment.
