IMO awards bravery at sea

Second Officer Topiwala and Captain Ostric awarded for their bravery when rescuing survivors from a sunken ship.

IMO has given the Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea to two seafarers who risked their lives to save others in a dramatic rescue operation in gale-force winds.

Second Officer Mustafa Topiwala and Captain Zvonimir Ostric of the Bahamas-flagged OBO carrier Searose G received the award for their efforts when rescuing survivors from the sunken vessel Teklivka in Eastern Mediterranean in 2006. In rough weather conditions they saved nine crewmembers. An additional three were saved by another vessel. Three seafarers from the Teklivka lost their lives. Bahamas and the International Federation of Shipmasters’ Associations (IFSMA) nominated Mustafa Topiwala and Captain Zvonimir Ostric, who received silver medals. Eight other nominees were given certificates.
