Nordic officer union’s call for action against piracy
The Nordic officers union’s has started a call for action against piracy attacs, primarily off the Somali coast.
The union’s frpm Sweden, Norway, Iceland ant the Faroe Islands call for the UN, IMO and all international, governmental as well as non governmental, to put preasure on Somalia to make sure pirates cannot hi jack vessels on international water and take them into Somali territorial waters without any action from the Somali government. The Nordic organisations also want to see a task force, resembling the one in the Malacca strait, in the region. The Nautical Institute, Japanese Captain’s Association as well as the International Federation of Shipmasters’ Associations (IFSMA) are now officially supporting the call.
Nautilus UK, who has their own campaign against piracy with similar opinions, has made a survey among its members. This study shows that most officer’s think better manning is the most important measure to take against piracy since the role of Ship Security Officer cannot be handled if it is a burden laid on top of already existing duties, writes Safety at Sea.
